Medicinal Mushrooms: Chaga and Reishi

Mushrooms are considered a superfood as they have a great deal of nutritional value and are packed with micronutrients. They are fat and cholesterol free foods that are low in carbohydrates and high in fiber.

While there are around 250 edible varieties of mushrooms, we will look at only two medicinal varieties in this article and discuss their benefits as superfoods.

Reishi (the queen) and Chaga (the king) of mushrooms have both been used extensively in traditional Chinese medicine for a long time.

Here are some of the top health benefits that these mushroom varieties can offer:

  1. Prevention

Both reishi and chaga mushrooms can have cancer fighting properties. For instance, reishi mushrooms contain several different antioxidants and amino acids which are believed to protect a person’s DNA. This protective action can stop irregular cell mutations while protecting healthy cells. Likewise, chaga mushrooms can also help.

  1. Anti-inflammatory potential

Reishi mushrooms can help improve blood circulation and lower inflammation, making them effective for infections. They have often been used to treat inflammatory problems.

The chaga mushroom has been shown to reduce inflammation in conditions such as ulcerative colitis where inflammation causes ulcer symptoms in the digestive tract.

  1. Improved energy levels

The reishi mushroom is linked to increasing energy levels because it can reduce the amount of toxins or heavy metals which collect in the body and bring about sluggishness. This can help improve concentration, boost memory and promote better sleep quality.

The chaga mushroom owes improved physical endurance to their special carbohydrate content. This nutrient can help fuel muscles. As a result, you feel less fatigued and experience better endurance.

  1. Promotes heart health

Certain chemical compounds in reishi mushrooms have cholesterol and blood pressure lowering properties. They may be able to do so in two ways; firstly, they improve circulation and secondly, they lower inflammation. Both actions are beneficial for controlling cholesterol levels and can assist in keeping blood pressure readings low.

  1. Stimulates the immune system

Chaga mushrooms have been studied to strengthen immunity by increasing the production of certain immune cells and white blood cells. Both these actions can help reinforce immunity and strengthen the body in fighting invading viruses.

The chemical compounds of these mushrooms can help balance the immune response of the body meaning that the immune system gets boosted when needed, but slows down when it is overactive. This action enables the immune system to differentiate between the body’s cells and foreign cells and respond accurately to protect the body from foreign invasion.
