Hummus has quickly become one of the most popular dips in the last years. A healthier version then the traditional cheese dip, hummus usually includes healthier ingredients full of nutritional value.
One of the primary ingredients of hummus is chickpeas. Chickpeas are one of the healthiest ingredients in the market right now due to their many health benefits. For starters, they are naturally gluten-free. Other benefits of chickpeas are that they are rich in fiber, iron and protein.
Hummus has been around for several decades and although it’s originally from the middle east, it’s quickly made its home across North America and Europe.
There are several health benefits of eating hummus since they are full of healthy ingredients and low in calorie. While they are rich in nutritional value, their main benefits include being a rich source of plant-based protein, good energy booster, protects heart health, high in vitamin and minerals, helps digestion and can help decrease inflammation.
Making homemade hummus is actually quite simple and healthier. A lot of store-bought hummus will include oil in the ingredients to make it creamier. Oil is not very healthy and high in calories, so in the long run, it can be problematic. Which is why I strongly suggest making your own hummus at home that is oil-free. Not only is it a healthier choice, but it’s actually quite simple and doesn’t require a lot of time or ingredients.
As long as you have a good food processor with an ‘S’ blade to make it easy to blend the products, there really isn’t much to it other then just adding the ingredients.
Like I mentioned previously, chickpeas are one of the key ingredients in hummus. Their nutty flavor and creamy texture really bring all the other ingredients together.
That being said, the first ingredient in this recipe is chickpeas. Once you add the chickpeas to the food processor, you can add in a bit of water, lemon juice, nutritional yeast, garlic, pepper and a dash of paprika. You can then blend all the ingredients together until you get a nice creamy texture. It shouldn’t take more then a minute or two for everything to come together.
The whole process takes less then five minutes and you have a healthier version of hummus made in the comfort of your home compared to the store-bought hummus which are usually filled with fatty oils.
